MORE ABOUT US

In efforts to bridge the literacy gap and assist students in becoming proficient and life-long readers, Daniel Hale Williams Elementary has implemented Reading is My Superpower Literacy initiative. The initiative will consist of students and teachers engaging in a unique, shared reading experience. Each grade level has chosen a text that they will read collectively.  Each text is chosen because of it’s high interest, and overall connection to the school’s diverse groups of students.  It is further believed that the coordinated activities associated with the literacy initiative will improve reading comprehension, positively impact standardized test scores, and increase students’ reading for pleasure aptitude. At the end of the initiative, their will be a celebration and display of student work related to the texts they have read. We are inviting parents and community members to engage with us as we change the lives of students, One Page at a Time!

Daniel Hale Williams  is an urban public school located in Gary, Indiana.  The students and staff believe in a culture that built upon the pillars of  Relationships, Respect, and Responsibility.  We believe that all learning begins with a solid foundation in literacy; when children are empowered with literacy, ideas unfold, and lives can change.
